I don't know if this is the right place to ask it but hope so. I have a Disk Warrior 4.4 DVD.cdr file. In previous OSX I could boot a Mac from a DVD.

Present Macs do not seem to allow it (I have now Mavericks in a new MacPro). In order to have a possibility to check the main drive of the new MacPro from outside with Disk Warrior (in case I might one day need it) I tried unsuccessfully to make a bootable USB stick with that Disk Warrior file in it. I googled and found in 'blog.lewan.com' a step by step instruction how to transform any ISO file into a img (not needed in my case since a.cdr is already an Image) and how, using in the Terminal hdiutil and diskutil the needed file should be finally transferred to the USB stick. In such a way by pressing the Alt key when booting the Mac I might choose to boot from the key and use in my case Disk Warrior. So I thought.

However I have not found any way to make it work. Neither copying directly the.cdr file to the USB stick not transforming the.cdr (which is already an Image!) into a.dmg nor any other way (for instance use 'Restore' in Disk Utility) brought me a bootable USB stick with Disk Warrior in it. Click to expand.Thank you very much for your kind instructions. I found an alternative to the procedure you indicate although essentially it follows your idea. If I clone the HD of the MacPro (for instance in an external USB Drive), I can boot from that clone and let the true HD of the Mac Pro be checked with, for instance Disk Warrior or any other tool not allowing to check the main drive while in use by OSX.

Actually it is the same procedure you suggest in a slightly different manner. The only advantage is that a clone drive is a safety measure if something goes wrong with the main HD. Thank you very much again for your suggestion!

I downloaded DiskWarrior to rebuild the HD in my MBP because it's getting a bit slow and seems to 'think' a lot these days, I don't want to wait the 3 weeks to get the disk, so on the Alsoft site I'm told that without the bootable disk I need to install it on another machine, but my other machine is a new macbook with the infamous lack of Firewire and therefore also no facility to startup and target drive. If you have an external drive you can use, then install OS X on it, put the DW application on the drive, then boot from the external drive. You could also use a USB flash drive if it's 8 GB or larger.

Or you could use Disk Utility to repair your drive: Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.

When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.' S ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. Status of the hard drive. If it does not say 'Verified' then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is 'Verified' then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.

If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally. If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive.
