Eventually traced the problem to the temperature reset button on the child unit (the blue button to the side). This button was lodged solid in the device; on inspection because of the wire of the temperature sensor. I've opened up the child unit (remove the four small screws with a watchmakers screwdriver) and removed the entire temp. Reset button.
The set up works as normal (but with a bit of gap). With a bit more time, you might be able to fix the temperature sensor wire and get the temperature reset to work again.
